BIO

Joy Zelada (b. 1989, Trujillo, Peru) is a Newburgh based guitarist and music instructor.  Zelada has completed an Associate in Arts with music concentration at SUNY Orange, and Bachelors of Music as well as a Master of Arts in guitar performance at Hunter College of The City University of New York.  He has studied with influential teachers and performers such as Mike Benninger, Sara Overholt, Thomas Millioto and Mariano Aguirre, Jorge Caballero, Rene Izquierdo, among other elite musicians.  Upon finishing his studies, Zelada now develops his career by performing and teaching.  Zelada has a broad repertoire which allows him to perform for different settings: private and public concerts, cocktail parties, art exhibitions, funerals, memorials, weddings, among other events.  His repertoire includes music for the Spanish renaissance vihuela, a predecessor of the guitar, from lute works of the baroque period to the classical, romantic and modern guitar.  Zelada understands the identity that music gives to the artist, hence, his performances deliberately include music of his native Peru: "music that has created curiosity and captivated the ears of his audience."  If given the time, Zelada is more than willing to learn requested music appropriate for any event.  Besides playing solo guitar, Zelada is the guitarist at Ridgecrest Baptist Church and founder of the Americas Quintet, a versatile music ensemble.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As a guitar teacher and music instructor, Zelada gives his best effort at passing along his musical knowledge.  With many years of experience, Zelada has developed the art of teaching so that the student gets the most out each lesson.  Zelada is very sensitive to the interest of his students, but also provides advice that would be beneficial in the long-run; this varies individually on the level or interest of each pupil.

Although specialized and trained classically, Zelada is able to teach different styles, and makes learning fun and engaging to the student.  Zelada's goal is to create well-rounded musicians who are able to play different styles--competently--read for any future opportunities.  Zelada is a teacher at his private studio, The Newburgh Performing Arts Academy, a substitute music teacher at Newburgh Free Academy.  Zelada gives masterclasses and performs regularly in the upstate New York area and NYC.
